Before and After School
Our duty of care begins from the moment that children are collected by an adult in the morning, or ‘handed over’ to a member of staff in Breakfast Club. This duty of care extends until we 'hand the children back' to a responsible adult at pick up time - or in the case of our Year 5 and 6 children, who have signed permission, when we dismiss them to walk home.
-
Some children choose to play at school before and after school. The school does not at these periods have members of staff on duty to supervise and take care of the children. We do not object to this happening, but we have to make sure to all parents that you are aware that during these periods of time we are not responsible for the supervision and safety of your children. All school climbing equipment is clearly signposted to reflect this statement.
For before school clubs that your children attend, the same principles apply. We are responsible for your children from the time that the club starts and we will make sure they are taken to class.
For after school clubs we will take them to the club, then dismiss them into the care of a responsible adult at the end of the club.
Permission to Walk Home - Year 5 and 6 only
Parents of children in Years 5 and 6 have the option of walking to and from school. In order to be permitted to do this parents/carers must sign a consent form allowing their child to do this. We however expect all children to be collected from any club or event that finishes after 3:15pm between 21st October and 21st March (when the clocks change) as these are the darkest months of the year and we do not feel that it would be safe for any child to walk through Blackthorn without a responsible adult to accompany them over this winter period.
Consent forms for Years 5 and 6 are sent home at the start of the academic year, or can be requested from the school office.
Bicycles, Scooters and Wheelies
To help us keep everyone safe, children who ride to school are expected to:
- Wear a helmet to protect them from falls or accidents.
- Dismount as they come in to the playground and walk with their bike or scooter so as to keep everyone safe.
- Arrange with the class teacher where they can park their bike during school hours.
Balls
We love football at Blackthorn Primary School and our Sports Coach provides amazing opportunities throughout your child’s time at school to enjoy a wide variety of ball games. Before and after school are not times to throw or kick a ball in the playground as we have many young children and adults around who may be hurt by a stray ball. Therefore, we ask that there are no ball games on the playground before or after school unless part of a structured sports club.
Thank you for your support in keeping our school a safe and happy place.
